The Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix, a flying sporting competition that features 10 equivalent F50 yachts competing in each two-day competition, will make its way to New York this trip.
The$ 1 million winner- get- all race is the subsequent- to- last stop of the league’s third season. Next month, sailors from 10 national teams ( USA, Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, New Zealand, Spain and Switzerland ) will compete to lift the championship trophy—and bank$ 2 million in prize money—in San Francisco.
” Coming up here to New York City has been a huge coming of age for SailGP”, SailGP’s managing director, Andrew Thompson, said in a video call. SailGP has n’t returned to the Big Apple since this season, but New York was one of the five locations where the league initially took place. ” We’ve been overjoyed with how the city has responded in terms of fans turning out,” he said.

SailGP expanded from six clubs and five activities to 10 clubs and 12 occasions this year, and more activities will be added to the timeline the following year. 11 out of 12 companies will be starting for the fifth year, with the remaining teams going to be dropped based on the teams ‘ overall business performance at the end of the year.
The team’s i- owners, Larry Ellison ( the billionaire owner of Oracle ) and five- day America’s Cup champion Russell Coutts, were the original bulk masters of SailGP, but five of the 10 teams this season are presently owned by outside investors. ” Future time, at least nine of the 11 team will be funded from the outside”, Coutts said in an interview in New York.
Mubadala Capital announced its intention to buy a newly formed SailGP staff to reflect Brazil following the release of the New York race. In 2025, the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team will be the team’s 11th group, and Alan Adler, a previous Olympian who co-founded the Portuguese activities and entertainment company IMM, is currently the CEO of Brazil Motor Sports, did co-own the co-founded Mubadala Brazil.
And SailGP’s global expansion wo n’t stop in Brazil—the league already awarded Italy a franchise.
Since time one, Thompson said,” We have been on a significant development direction.” ” Adding new businesses and bringing national team, which immediately create a fan base in new markets, has been a part of that rise voyage.”
The United States team was purchased by former Milwaukee Bucks user Marc Lasry’s Avenue Sports Fund, which included users Ryan and Margaret McKillen and Mike Buckley.
Lasry’s team even included artist and maker Issa Rae, world champion heavyweight boxer Deontay Wilder, NFL stars DeAndre Hopkins, Malik Jackson, Roquan Smith and Kayvon Thibodeaux, University of Alabama football star Dallas Turner, past U. S. soccer player Jozy Altidore, University of Michigan basketball legend Katelynn Flaherty Yates, Muse Capital’s Assia Grazioli- Venier, and entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk.
Lasry’s investment, which was over$ 35 million, was the largest sale to date at the time. According to Thompson, the valuations have increased by 20 % this year and are projected to increase even more in the future. ” The Brazilian transaction will be our biggest today”, he said. Two years ago, SailGP was selling teams between$ 5 million and$ 10 million.

After Ben Ainslie, the most decorated Olympic sailor of all time, purchased the SailGP team with Chris Blake and Misland Capital, Bermuda’s property tycoon Peter Green, the team was the first to be sold. A consortium of individuals from Switzerland, including driver Sebastian Schneider, owns the Swiss team.
Sebastian Vettel, a four-time F1 World Champion, and Erik Heil, a two-time Olympic sailing bronze medalist, joined German telecom mogul Thomas Riedel in acquiring the German team from SailGP in May. Soon, ownership of Australia’s team will change hands. Individuals or businesses can bid on them as well, Thompson said, adding that” Canada, Spain, and France are all subject to this.”
The investor interest in SailGP is not unfounded. Since its first season began in 2019, the sailing league’s audience in the United States has grown thanks to CBS Sports ‘ broadcast agreement. According to SailGP, 13.6 million people tuned into the world’s broadcast of the race this year, and the audience for each event increased by 24 % in the third season. Last November, 1.784 million viewers tuned into the CBS broadcast of a race in Spain, a SailGP record for an American audience. Since 1992, that sailing competition was the most popular in the United States.
Similar to Formula 1, SailGP also produces a behind-the-scenes racing documentary series for YouTube. In its second season, it has been watched by over 2.5 million viewers since launching in 2021, with a watch time increase of 871 % this season.
” We have the fastest boats on the water, and some compare us with Formula 1″, Coutts said. ” The difference is our boats are identical, and all the teams get access to the same technology. Here, the team with the best skills wins the race”. The Sail GP competition in New York takes place on June 22 through June 23; this has been clarified in the first paragraph.
