The next 24 World Series between the American League and National League were evenly split, with each team winning 12. But, as Yahoo Sports ‘ Kendall Baker pointed out, the former dominates the past in attendance.
As of May 30, seven of the best eight MLB groups with ordinary home attendances were AL games and seven of the lower nine were AL games. In total, NL clubs draw an average of 30, 557 followers per match, while the AL venues fill simply 23, 784 chairs.
That difference is little new—NL groups have averaged more fans in each of the previous 20 seasons—but it is growing. The direct over the NL has never been greater during that period.
The NL West and AL Central are the only two groups that account for the majority of the gap, according to a closer examination of the data.
The NL West has been the most popular section since 2006, dominating every year in terms of presence. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been drawing the biggest crowds in baseball for more than ten years as they have surpassed the New York Yankees as the league’s most successful regular-season group. Their advantage may be strengthened in the upcoming years with the changes of pitchers Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani in free agency.
After finishing in the lower half of venues as late as 2018, the San Diego Padres have risen to minute in the attendance chart. In addition, the Colorado Rockies ‘ devoted fans have consistently shown up to cheer their team up in recent years despite their lack of on-field victory.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have seen an increase in their presence in 2024 after riding the moneyball comet that occurs every ten years or but all the way to the World Series. Although audiences across MLB overall are down 7 % year- over- season, the Diamondbacks ‘ 29, 936 fans per game reflects a 24 % increase and rates 13th.
The AL Central is located at the opposite end of the spectrum. The Cleveland Guardians are the division’s 22nd-ranked company, trailing only the Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, and Chicago White Sox, who rank second.
The lessons learned from the paradox between these two groups: If you build it, they will occur.
The Dodgers and Padres both made the biggest season spending pledges in MLB history in 2024 and 2023. Every one NL West staff is among the top 16 full payments in MLB, according to Spotrac, with the Rockies ‘$ 145.8 million bringing up the rear.
Compare that to the AL Central, in which the White Sox are the highest- saving group at$ 136.3 million and 18th in the majors.
Also true: If you do n’t build it, they wo n’t come. Look no further than the Oakland Athletics, who have the most expensive pay in baseball and have fewer fans per game than the clubs for minor league sports and school wrestlers.
