Tucupita Marcano, an infielder for the San Diego Padres, was completely prohibited by Major League Baseball for gambling on the field.
Four other players—Athletics cup Michael Kelly, along with three small group players, Padres cup Jay Groome, Phillies outfielder José Rodríguez and Diamondbacks cup Andrew Saalfrank—have been declared ineligible for one month for violations of MLB’s betting policy.
According to MLB, betting information obtained from a sports betting controller revealed Marcano made 387 bets on football between Oct. 16, 2022, and Nov. 1, 2023, including 231 MLB- associated bets, while a part of the Pittsburgh Pirates business. He spent over$ 150, 000 on sports bet including$ 87, 319 on MLB- stakes, with the existing bets placed on global football game.
While playing for the major league team, he placed 25 bet on Pirates games, but he never showed up in any of the game he placed wagers on. Nevertheless, Marcano won 4.3 % of his MLB- related wagers and lost all of his Pirates wagers.
The strict application of Major League Baseball’s rules and regulations on gambling behavior is essential to upholding our most essential goal, which is the supporters ‘ enjoyment of our game,” said MLB director Rob Manfred in a statement.
The NBA has already suspended former Toronto Raptors person Jontay Porter for life for breaking the team’s betting regulations following this investigation. Marino is the first MLB active player to be forever exempt after Pete Rose was completely barred while he was the manager of the Cincinnati Reds in 1989.
