Apparently, Manchester City has filed legal actions against the English Premier League over the team’s funding policies.
As reported by The Times, Manchester City put together a 165- page legal document to challenge the league’s Associated Party Transaction ( APT ) rules, which the club believes are unlawful. These guidelines are intended to stop affiliated factions from consenting to sponsor agreements that go beyond fair market value. EPL leagues had previously attempted to change APT rules following the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund PIF’s invasion of Newcastle United in 2021.
A two-week secret arbitration hearing before an impartial tribunal is scheduled for June 10 as the next stage in the case.
The Premier League declined to comment. Manchester City did not respond to Sportico’s ask to reply.
The club announced that it was preparing for a reading on City’s reported rule-breaking, which would involve 115 allegations relating to the team’s financial fair play. The eight-time Tournament champions in a statement released by the Premier League in February of last year found them to have broken the league’s financial regulations every season from 2008 to 2019. During that time, the team won three EPL titles ( 2012, 2014, 2018 ).
The Premier League alleges that the team did not adhere to UEFA rules regarding membership licensing and financial fair play between 2013 and 2015 and between 2017 and 2018.
In 2020, Man City was banned from UEFA’s European competitions for alleged breaches of financial fair play ( FFP ) regulations. After that season, the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the punishment.
Manchester City has persistently denied any wrongdoing.
Man City has challenged the Premier League’s election regulations, which require 14 out of 20 clubs to support any plan that needs to be approved, according to a report that was part of the lawsuit.
