The Olympics are thought of as being steeped in history, but only four activities disciplines—athletics, landscaping, swimming and artistic gymnastics —have been included in every individual Summer Olympics since 1896. That second Olympics featured 43 events in nine activities, with single people competing. 329 silver medals will be awarded to a much more varied athlete share in Paris this summer. Over the years, things have changed a lot. The International Olympic Committee ( IOC ) views a sport as encompassing all disciplines governed by that federation, and each Olympic sport is represented by an international governing body. For instance, the sport “aquatics, ” which is overseen by World Aquatics, comprises five Olympic disciplines: swimming, artistic swimming, diving, water polo and open water swimming. Most activities, however, have just one skill. Beginning with the 2020 Summer Games, the IOC designated a group of “core ” sports, which are mandatory and persist between iterations of the Olympics. The organizing council may finally suggest adding up to six extra athletics for any given time. For 2020 in Tokyo, skateboarding, surfing, activity walking, karate and sports & ball were included as fresh Olympic disciplines. Sports frequently add new fields, such as when BMX freestyle made its debut under the racing umbrella in 2020. In Tokyo, 33 baseball was also unveiled. Breaking, an industrial party style with stems in hip-hop culture, is the only activity that will make its comeback in the 2024 Olympics. Sports and Karate The Paris Games will take up skateboarding, riding, and sports climbing from 2020, rounding out the roster of four additional activities for these Olympics, which includes ball, but they are not from four years ago. Baseball andamp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp; are the five additional activities that have been approved for 2028. kickball, baseball, flag soccer, lacrosse and pumpkin, while breaking may be dropped. Also, surfing, climbing and skateboarding may be added as main activities, with that moving the total up to 30. Many of the first Olympic game ‘ activities were discontinued after a few looks, or in some cases, just one. Tug of war, jeu de paume, golf and water sports, among some, were all included in Olympic games due to 1924. Virtually every game that was added has been made a core sport since World War II. Sports, which became a recognized sport in 1992 but was voted out in 2005, in part due to the lack of cooperation from MLB players, is the notable exception. According to baseball’s acceptance in Japan and the United States, it was added for the 2020 and 2028 Olympics, both, but remains an optional activity. In contrast, some early-discontinued sports, like baseball in 2028 and golf, have returned to the system. Tennis, likewise, underwent a long break starting in 1928 before making its returning in 1988. Without actually including them in the award count, the Olympics for the majority of the previous century had demonstration sports to either foster or evaluate interest in a new sport. Some of the activities that were developed in this manner, such as sports, were eventually made official sports, but demonstration sports are no longer practiced. Also, numerous activities, such as ball in 1988 or wushu in 2008, were played even though they were not officially recognized by the IOC as show activities. Despite having a wide range of activities, sports, which is regarded as only one discipline, has won the most medals at each Summer Olympics and will have 48 at Paris. Swimming, with 35, is the discipline with the following most. Shooting, which had 21 activities featured in Belgium in 1920 before the game was briefly dropped in 1928, is the only other activity to ever have more than 20 gold activities in a single summers. Generally, however, the number of events in each sport has increased over time. Weightlifting, which will have only 10 weight categories in 2024, down from 14 in 2020, is another rare exception. Overall, the 329 events that will be contested in Paris are only slightly below the 339 events that were held during the previous Summer Games.
