Gottlieb Is Melting Down at Green Bay. It’ll Cost a Lot to Quit Him

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay made the unconventional choice this summer to appoint Doug Gottlieb as brain men’s basketball coach, which is still generating the wrong type of buzz.
Under the provocative media face with no previous head coaching practice, the Phoenix are then 2-11 in their inaugural period. Prior to the game, Gottlieb denigrated Division II Michigan Tech, whom they lost to on Wednesday night. Green Bay is currently in the top five. 326 out of 364 D-I groups, according to KenPom’s positions, after finishing next year No. 230.
When Gottlieb and ESPN’s Adam Schefter got into a fight over whether Sacramento State, a class that isn’t in Green Bay’s event or region, had secured$ 50 million in NIL funding for its football players, the collecting dumpster fire that engulfed the Phoenix started earlier this month. Gottlieb followed up that social media diversion by taking to X just before Wednesday’s match to give his consider on whether Michigan’s Trey Burke fouled Louisville’s Peyton Siva during a strip test in the 2013 NCAA men’s hockey national finals.

What is Josh Moon, the chairman of Green Bay athletics, supposed to do? It will cost the Horizon League college a lot if he wants to leave the situation in the next 71 days.
( Moon did not respond to an email requesting comment from a university athletics representative. )
According to Gottlieb’s work contract, if the college terminates him without produce within the first two years of his five-year deal, he may be owed half the remaining base salary at the date of termination. As of now, that tally works out to about$ 2.3 million, a figure that exceeds the revenue the basketball team generated last season ($ 2.02 million ), according to the school’s financial disclosures with the Department of Education.
As of May 1, 2026, the university’s termination charge may drop to one-and-a-half days the remaining amount of his basic income.
Gottlieb’s agreement states that he can be fired for reason if he is found to have engaged in do that” constitutes social turpitude” or that “would result in reputational harm to the Men’s Basketball Program, Green Bay Athletics, or the University”. Squabbling on social media with” Shefty” does not fall to this amount.
And the school must give Gottlieb written notice of the “factual base” for the act as well as” a fair opportunity to treat such breach” before terminating him for cause.

On the other hand, if Gottlieb wishes to quickly enter the offer prior to the 2026 NCAA men’s regional championship sport, he would earn the school$ 850, 000.
Gottlieb created a separate” conflict management plan” to balance his full-time coaching duties with his logistical juggling of his media work.
Gottlieb was conspicuously absent from his Fox Sports Radio afternoon show after Wednesday’s defeat to Michigan Tech.
The management plan specifies that it will go through periodic review and that Gottlieb’s assistant coaches and athletes will be urged to contact AD Moon if they are unable to “get reasonable contact” with the head coach.
