In the biggest sport of the school basketball year so far, second-ranked Georgia and fourth-ranked Alabama represent the best of SEC sport. They have produced numerous NFL leads and won three of the previous four national tournaments combined.
The two courses have also contributed significantly to making the SEC the nation’s most attractive athletic event. A quick look at their financial information demonstrates the assumption that they spend a lot of money to get even more.
In 2022-23, the last full year available in Sportico’s college sports financial database, Alabama had the fourth-highest total operating expenses in the nation at$ 212.0 million while Georgia ranked 13th at$ 186.6 million. In terms of operating costs, Alabama has always been among the top four open institutions.

Sports, predictably, takes up the biggest percentage of those bills. Alabama spends$ 83.3 million, 39 % of the Tide’s total operating expenses, on football, compared to Georgia’s$ 69.0 million, or 37 % of the Bulldogs ‘ operating expenses.
In terms of generated revenue, the teams reversed position with the Bulldogs landing fifth at$ 206.5 million and the Crimson Tide 11th at$ 197.3 million. Georgia football pulled in$ 152.7 million of the school’s generated revenue versus Alabama’s$ 129.3 million.
The two institutions have largely mirrored one another in terms of revenue over the past six years, despite having alternated areas in the ranks every other year. Georgia’s football team accounts for a larger share of its school’s generated revenue ( generally between 72-76 % in a given year outside of COVID-impacted 2020-21 ) than Alabama’s team does ( 59-66 % ).
A reduction in a game of this size may have disastrous effects on the losing team’s chances of making the College Football Playoff. However, the SEC has defied for logic in the postseason age, with one-loss team at both colleges getting seats in the playoffs.
In 2017-18, the year Alabama topped Georgia in the national championship game, the Tide pulled in$ 174.9 million in generated revenue, including$ 111.1 million from football. Georgia had$ 173.2 million in generated revenue, including$ 129.0 from football. Both football teams had record amounts of profits in generated revenue four years later, in 2021-22, when the Bulldogs won the national name. Georgia football tallied$ 156 million of the$ 199.5 million in generated revenue while Alabama football tallied$ 130.9 of the program’s$ 202 million.
In 2024, Georgia and Alabama might compete in the SEC Championship Game in the first place and the recently expanded College Football Playoff, which features 12 teams competing for the first time. More games result in more money, especially when the two teams compete in a playoffs.
