A Senate committee approved the probable shift to the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium page a few months later, opening the door for the Washington Commanders to make their way back to D.C.
H. R. 4984, a bill that would grant the town 99-year leases on the RFK Stadium page, was passed by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The National Park Service now owns the site, but Events DC, the state’s top sports and entertainment company, manages it. The facility itself has been abandoned since 2017 and is slated to be destroyed by the year 2023. However, the complete destruction has not yet occurred.
The Senate floors will now be able to access the House bill after it was defeated by a 17-to-1 voting. Despite Republicans regaining control of the lower room, set to take effect in January, the act has bipartisan support.

In February, the House also passed a act, the RFK Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act, with a 348-55 voting. All but one of the Maryland members cast a ballot in favor of the bill because Jamie Raskin did no.
The president’s signature may be required for the bill to be passed before Joe Biden’s term is finished, or President-elect Donald Trump’s new year, really the whole Senate decide in favor of ceding site control to the city.
Muriel Bowser, the president of Washington, D. C., expressed her support of the commission vote. The president said in a speech that” today’s voting marks a pivotal moment in our attempts to unlock the potential of the RFK Campus by turning this underused space into a vibrant hub of inexpensive housing, world-class recreational facilities, green spots, and financial option for District residents and visitors.”
From 1961 until 1996, the Commanders resided at RFK Stadium under the name Northwest Stadium, which is still in use today in the suburbs of Baltimore. ( Cooke died in 1997, months before the new stadium opened. ) Over the years, teams from MLB, MLS, the NCAA, and more have played at Rink.
Former owner Daniel Snyder has unsuccessfully lobbied numerous DMV officials for various locations in the area in search of a new stadium. The Commanders have searched for a new stadium for years. The new ownership group, led by D. C-area native Josh Harris, wants the Commanders to move into a new stadium by 2030. Maryland and Virginia officials are attempting to petition the team to permit the construction of the new stadium in their states after the lease expires in 2027.

Following the vote, the team stated in a statement that it is keeping its options open. The Commanders have been fortunate to have interest from three incredible nations looking for a new stadium and home, according to the statement. ” The vote today brings us one step closer to continuing discussions with Maryland and Virginia as potential future residences for our franchise,” he said.
Northwest Stadium, which was formerly FedEx Field until this past August, underwent a$ 75 million makeover, which included a new VIP fan tunnel and a remodeled premium space.
