Viewers and members of the local community were vocal critics and opposition when the Washington Commanders unveiled the monument of the late health Sean Taylor two years ago. On Saturday, the team announced it plans to replace the monument, which reviewers said resembled a low doll, and is working the Taylor home to replace it.
After being selected with Miami in 2004 with the second overall pick, Taylor spent four seasons with the Commanders. The Ring of Fame honor rose to prominence as one of the team’s top players in that time, but tragically died in a 2007 home invasion attempt. He was only 24 years older.
The Commanders built a memorial for him at the facility on the 15th anniversary of his death, which occurred two years ago. The issue was that Taylor’s name activity look was lacking and the statue of the two-time Pro Bowler was uninspired. The initial installation did n’t include the appropriate jersey ( Reebok instead of Nike ) and did n’t tape his face mask, as Taylor did while he was playing. As well as using the right type of boots and cleats, the business quickly changed the assembly to include those. One of the last painful moments of Dan Snyder’s 24-year reign as the group proprietor, which was marred by scandal and dysfunction, was the opening.
Jackie Taylor, the daughter of Taylor, may be part of the layout process for the new monument. Taylor, who wears her husband’s No. 21 thanked Josh Harris, the team’s bulk owner, and the University of North Carolina for choosing to change her father’s memorial. Harris and his rights group, which includes NBA star Magic Johnson, purchased the team for a report$ 6 billion next summer.
The group claimed in a speech that the most recent assembly was insufficient:” Together with the Taylor community, we are working on a plan that includes the opening of a monument that will rightly honor Sean’s legacy and impact on our organization, fan base, and community. The Commanders are dedicated to paying homage to our great heroes in a first-class way.
The Commanders have yet to choose a new venue in the DMV area because they are considering the different states where they will relocate. In the interim, the new ownership group has invested more than$ 75 million in capital improvements and improvements to their current stadium in Landover, Maryland.
Taylor’s No. 21 shirt was retired in 2021, becoming the third person in franchise history to make the classification. The new memorial will be able to walk to the team’s fresh place once it’s constructed.
