Despite retiring at the end of the 2021- 22 season, former Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski received virtually$ 9 million in payment from the ACC organization in fiscal year 2023. This haul is in addition to the over$ 100 million in Krzyzewski’s collegiate career earnings.
Krzyzewski, who now maintains the position of school adviser, was paid a base payment of$ 2.37 million and reward and incentive compensation of$ 5.92 million in FY23, according to Duke University’s most recently filed tax return released Wednesday. In contrast, Krzyzewski received pensions and delayed give of$ 608, 831.
As a private university in North Carolina, Duke is not content to the state’s available data rules. Therefore, the public’s lone window into the earnings of its ( highest- paid ) employees is typically relegated to its annual return which, as a federal 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) charity, it is required to disclose upon request.

The latest IRS processing also disclosed that Krzyzewski used the school’s private air charter providers, though to what degree is not apparent. Krzyzewski has been appointed a unique assistant to sports activities for the NBA since his retirement as a manager. Additionally, the Athletic reported that he was now advising the Los Angeles Lakers regarding the hunt for head coaches.
Krzyzewski’s full payment of$ 8, 990, 914 was more than half that of the next- highest- paid Duke staff, previous head football coach David Cutcliffe, who earned$ 4.39 million. In what was widely regarded as a mutually agreed split, the school agreed to pay Cutcliffe as a severance payment after he left the job in 2021.
Cutcliffe’s successor, Mike Elko, received$ 4.2 million in FY23 while Duke’s current men’s basketball coach, Jon Scheyer, received$ 1.7 million. Scheyer signed a six-year contract extension in October 2023, which is likely to increase that annual salary by multiples, though it wo n’t be known by how many multiples until Duke releases its FY24 tax returns in May.
However, it is safe to assume that the university’s fiscal year 2023 will be remembered as a financial gimmick, with the head of the institution receiving more than the university’s active head men’s basketball coach. Duke president Vince Price received$ 1.82 million.
