Big East’s March Madness Wins Key to Keeping Up With Football Powers

BOSTON — The Big East has more tournaments over the past 10 games than the Big 12, and more groups are participating in the Sweet Sixteen this year than the Big Ten. Connecticut will also have the first follow NCAA men’s basketball title winner since 2007 if it continues to dominate the meeting for four more matches. The Huskies have simply lost 11 days over the last two decades, 10 of those overcomes have been to Big East companies. And still, the event still seems to be fighting for value.
Coaches rightly felt snubbed when just three Big East team made this week’s NCAA Tournament—UConn, Creighton and Marquette, all of which are still intact. Three others—St. John’s, Seton Hall and Providence—were somewhat left out, leading to howling censure of the game collection commission. For adversities have an existential quality in this geological realignment and unavoidable uncertainty.

In the midst of the Pac- 12’s decline, was the Big East be the next meeting able to keep up with today’s energy players? Or, by continuing to accept sports, is the convention maintain stability amid the tumult? NCAA Tournament benefits —along with continuing media talks—will both been important in answering those concerns.
The Big East knows what it’s like to get torn apart. Again in 2013, the therefore- called Catholic 7—DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova—split off from the Big East to shape their own meeting, after gaining control of the conference name. The septet had had enough, swearing off football funds for good, after years of battling football-mad schools that went all the way up to a refusal of Penn State’s application to join the conference in 1982.
Butler, Creighton, and Xavier would all be added in” New Big East,” but UConn would rejoin in 2020, based on a long-term, basketball-focused TV partnership with Fox and its recently launched Fox Sports 1 Channel. CBS and CBS made a deal to also televise games.
Additionally, keeping up with conferences receiving larger salaries for football media rights, including the College Football Playoff disbursements that the Big East’s teams miss out on, would require NCAA payouts based on tournament performance. This past year, the CFP distributed more than$ 500 million to conferences, and that number is expected to increase.
” I ca n’t say I was optimistic”, former Villanova coach Jay Wright said last year of his feeling a decade prior. ” But I knew we had to make it work,” he said.
So where does a dominant basketball conference that does n’t offer football fit into the economics of college sports? The Big East reported$ 88 million in revenue in 2021- 22, according to its tax filings, well below even the lowest Power Five conference ( the Big 12 at$ 481 million ). It also trailed the American ($ 183 million ), but was the next richest NCAA conference by revenue, coming in ahead of the Mountain West ($ 79 million ).

Had it not been for the Big East’s past March Madness success, those comparisons would’ve been less favorable.
The Big East earned about$ 50 million in media revenue that year. Another$ 23 million was raised by the NCAA, largely as a result of the tournament’s unit-based payout model, which rewards teams for their accomplishments over the previous six years. That included two Wildcats title runs in this instance. Its third-largest line of business is the league’s own Madison Square Garden tournament, which generates revenue.
Keep winning in March, and those checks will keep coming. Any fall in financial footing could lead to a spiral in on-court relevance at a time when coaches frequently refer to the current combination of transfer freedom and NIL opportunities as “free agency.” Given that results are the only thing that matters more than money, tournament success also puts teams in better shape for the future. A higher level of conference competition and marquee victories outside of league play would n’t hurt either.
The three Big East conference teams that received bids have the best chance to win a national title, according to UConn guard Hassan Diarra’s statement on Wednesday. ” It’s tragic that some teams missed out”.
As for the media piece, the Big East’s rights become available again starting in 2025. UConn’s current form could n’t come at a better time for a conference attempting to ensure its long- term security.
” We’re in a very active stage” of rights negotiations, Big East commissioner Val Ackerman said. incumbents Fox and CBS are currently expected to hold onto large portions of the package as new deals get closer to the finish line. With plans to replace WWE’s Friday Night SmackDown with an end-of-week college football package, Fox could develop a similar hoops-based property for when the football season comes to an end. The network has expanded its basketball programming in recent years.
A third partner—possibly a streamer—might emerge as well. Outside of men’s basketball, the Big East has partnered with FloSports to host the Big East Digital Network.
Bob Thompson, a long-time sports TV executive and the founder of Thompson Sports Group, stated that” the media business is definitely facing some headwinds right now… but the need for programming is still present.” ” Product quality remains extremely important, so I certainly expect that a property like this would be at the top of]those rightsholders ‘ priority ] lists”.
Still, keeping up is only going to get more difficult with time. Even doubling the per-school media rights fees would cause Big East athletic departments to bring in only a fraction of what Big 12, Big Ten, and SEC schools are due to receive as part of their most recent megadeals.
Because of the money,” we anticipate there will be a growing revenue gap between the conferences we consider peers in basketball and us,” said Ackerman. ” That challenge is real for our schools”.
However, she added, Big East schools intend to generate the revenue needed to remain successful on the hardwood. And the basketball programs ‘ status as the biggest on-campus events has some advantages, from NIL priority to facility importance. Plus, there are n’t the football- related expenses to worry about.
Just over a decade after overhauling its membership, the Big East now stands out for its stability. As rumors of a Huskies-Big 12 dalliance fade for the time being, UNConnel is the only addition in that period, and the organization has n’t lost a member. Over the past few years, the conference has n’t seen the necessary financial value in expanding its basketball membership.
” At least for the moment, we think we’re in the right place,” Ackerman said, but she added that the conference would continue to monitor changes in the country in case of new opportunities.
In the meantime, the Big East’s current membership has extended historic rivalries like Georgetown- Villanova and fostered new ones, like Creighton- UConn. Despite being given its name, it continues to be the biggest basketball conference with some semblance of geographic logic. The group has so far demonstrated its ability to remain competitive on the court, no matter what the selection committee decides.
Ackerman will be in Boston on Thursday to watch the Huskies play a second-round matchup against San Diego State for the 2023 title. Then she travels to Detroit, where Creighton plays Friday night against Tennessee.
Where Ackerman flies from there is undetermined. But her conference, for now, is staying aloft.
