Deshaun Watson is still with the Cleveland Browns. They have no other alternative.
After restructuring his lease for a second time in three months, the NFL group is expected to keep the superstar quarterback on the roster. The Browns does possess buyer’s remorse over the distribution of his landmark$ 230 million, fully guaranteed deal, but they still have a creative way to handle its economic impact.
This most recent restructuring, which Watson consented to, also calls for him to get his$ 46 million guaranteed for each of the following two months, but it apparently allows the Browns to spread his useless money over several months if he stays with the group through the 2026 season. According to ESPN, this allows the Browns (3-12 ) to avoid paying a significant cap in 2027 when Watson is no longer under contract while adding a third and fourth void year, pushing the dead salary cap into 2030 ( he already had two void years from previous restructures ), according to ESPN.
Despite the restructuring on Friday, Watson still carries a$ 72.9 million salary cap hit for the 2025 and 2026 season ( the second highest ever in the NFL ), ballooning from his current hit of$ 27.9 million this season. Due to the previous two contract restructurings, which have resulted in more than$ 30 million in cap space but have also increased the burden on the back end of the deal,
Watson, who suffered a season-ending proper Achilles tendon injuries in late October, didn’t do much to solitude his critics this year. The 29-year-old started 9-10 games for the group, which is one of the league’s lowest overall player ratings. If Watson is released this winter ( before the June 1 title ), a league-record$ 172 million dead cap hit may be triggered.
The signing of the three-time Pro Bowler was supposed to alter the story of the Browns, a legendary company known for its losses. The five-year agreement he signed in 2022, which included the league’s most guaranteed cash, has turned out to be one of the worst sports history. It comes in addition to other NFL errors, including Andre Rison’s$ 17 million deal in 1995 ( another Browns error by signing a controversial player to an unprecedented offer ) and Albert Haynesworth’s$ 100 million friendship in 2009 ( one of several head-scratching goes by former Washington owner Dan Snyder ).
However, Watson’s package is undoubtedly the worst given the enormous deal and the fact that the Browns traded three first-round picks to Houston in exchange for the player who received an 11-game suspension in 2022 for a group do violation involving 23 sexual misconduct lawsuits brought against him by rub therapists. The Browns could have been given a break for the rest of their contract if the most recent sexual assault allegation from earlier this year, but the league couldn’t get enough evidence to refute it.
With small money, the Browns are attempting to make the most of the condition by signing a former signal caller through free agency. General manager Andrew Berry and the front office haven’t committed to Watson as their long-term player. However, they are not in a position to abandon their investment because they still think a return is possible and hope that he can transfer to the Pro Bowl shape he displayed in his first four months in Houston.
