Giants QB’s $23M Injury Clause May Send Him to the Bench

As the New York Giants consider how much it costs to keep the status quo at player, the team has become accustomed to other aimless NFL teams in recent years.
Giants starter Daniel Jones has struggled this season, and the Giants (2-8 ) took their fifth straight loss in Munich, Germany, on Sunday. His bad performance against the weak Carolina Panthers—New York went blank in the first quarter against the club’s worst defense—capped a hard first 10 games.
The team must then decide whether to put an end to the Jones period, which has yielded just one playoff victory in the previous six years. Brian Daboll, the Giants ‘ head coach, may bench him, and Jones ‘ contract may provide a justification for his absence from the field.
Jones ‘ current contract includes a clause that, if violated, would force the Giants to pay him$ 23 million in the following year. Russell Wilson ( Denver Broncos ) experienced this type of dance last year, making him the latest quarterback to go through it. Two years prior, the Raiders sat Derek Carr ( now with the Saints ) to avoid triggering a$ 33 million guaranteed payment, which the Raiders had done before.

NFL representative Brad Blank stated in an interview that” when you can communicate an injury maintain in a deal, it should be a feather in your cap, but in reality it can be used as a weapon against you,” and Daniel Jones is an example of that. ” If he had no damage promise, then maybe they would only keep him out there”.
Although Jones ‘ lack of first-team player practice on Tuesday suggested the group is seriously considering a potential move to copy Drew Lock, no decisions have been made regarding his future. Joe Schoen, Giants ‘ senior vice president and general manager, downplayed the practice structure and said Jones ‘ contract language would n’t be taken into account when making a decision.
” It will be a sports selection”, he said on Tuesday. ” Any decisions we make as we examine the lineup and what we’re doing for the last seven games will be sport decisions,” the statement reads.
Jones was benched by New York on October 20 for a 28-point lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite the temporary demotion, Daboldo continued to support Jones after the Week 7 loss, but things have n’t changed since. When asked about Jones ‘ future as a starter, the third-year coach seemed noncommittal when asked about his own job in danger.
Jones, who has thrown eight touchdowns and seven interceptions this year, signed a four-year,$ 160 million contract extension next month. If he is unwilling to undergo a physical in March after the 2025 group year because of an injury sustained this period, that is no longer guaranteed money after this year. However, that may change. It’s not unusual for quarterbacks, often among the group’s highest paid gamers, to have such damage stipulations in their contracts.
According to Roc Nation co-head of football and NFL representative John Thornton, “if a man is slated to make great money, and he’s not going to be in the future, therefore they’re probably going to sit him over” in an interview. ” That’s what ( injury guarantees ) are for, to put a trigger in so if they have no plans to bring him back, then the player and the team can get out of it”.

The Giants will process$ 22 million in dead money if they cut him this winter, an outcome that is becoming more and more plausible, especially with a star-studded 2025 QB review group.
On November 24 at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York will attempt to end its winning streak.
