Billy Horschel shot a 2-under line square of 69 on Saturday at Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland, taking the lead after a rainy second round of the British Open. He’s one strokes away of six golf. World No. One Scottie Scheffler sips two pictures again.
Horschel turned professional in 2009 and joined the Tour full-time in 2011. The 37-year-old American has won eight PGA Tour titles and ranked 11th in 2022, which is a good accomplishment for his career. A 15-year PGA Tour run is lucrative if you can add a few victories, most notably a seemingly unattainable 2014 FedEx Cup victory that included a$ 10 million bonus. In his professional life, Horschel has won$ 51.6 million in FedEx payouts and PGA reward money.
However, Horschel was not on anyone’s sensor entering the American Open, publicly the Open Championship. His established World Golf Ranking is 62, and he has won four top 10 finishes in 18 different occasions this time. His best big appearance of his career came at the 2013 U.S. Open, where he placed fourth overall. Over the following ten years, he did not finish in the best 15. He broke that run when he finished seventh at the 2024 PGA Championship.
BetMGM had Horschel’s chances at + 17500 to get the British Open, equal as Christiaan Bezuidenhout and just behind Tiger Woods at + 15000. At +500, Scheffler was the favourite.
After his large on Saturday, Horschel said,” Something I’ve done this month, and I’ve done a better job this month of it, or tried to do a better job, is sort of present seeing myself holding the prize before I go to sleep every night, envisioning myself holding that trophy on 18, walking out in the group and being congratulated as Open champion.”
Horschel would be a far cry from the least likely big win. In the modern age, Shawn Micheel is most likely to hold that subject. He won the 2003 PGA Championship, and it was the only PGA Tour triumph of his profession. Micheel finished second in the 2006 PGA Championship, but it was the only other time he always cracked the top 20 in a key. Todd Hamilton won only two Tour events, including the 2004 British Open, but he did n’t receive his PGA Tour card until he was 38. He always placed in the top 20 in a significant before or after that.
The total purse for the British Open is the smallest of the majors at$ 17 million, up 3 % over last year. The winner will earn$ 3.1 million, a$ 100, 000 increase over 2023 when American Brian Harmon won the Claret Jug.
