Craig Thompson, a previous Mountain West Conference director, received$ 2.44 million in payment for the fiscal year 2023, which marked the end of his almost 25-year tenure as the league’s director.
Thompson’s pay included a$ 1.3 million compensation, according to the MWC’s most just filed tax return, which was obtained by Sportico.
Thompson served as the MWC’s establishment director for 24 years before resigning at the end of 2022. Gloria Nevarez, who formerly served as commissioner of the West Coast Conference, was appointed in his place.
Over the course of Thompson’s career, the group experienced a number of spikes and lows—often revolving around the same handful of applications. Boise State joined the convention in 2010 just before Utah made the announcement that it would be leaving the Pac-12. A year later, Boise State and San Diego State, a founding MWC part, accepted invitations to visit the Big East, as part of that league’s 2013 growth strategies.
While that unfortunately did not come to go, Boise State and San Diego State did, over the ensuing generation, regularly entertain the idea of going abroad. That included SDS U’s most current, failed attempt to join the Pac- 12 next time.
Through it all, Thompson kept his conference’s main cluster of schools up, something similar ( or even better ) tournaments, such as the Big East and CUSA, failed to achieve over that career.
The MWC reported$ 78.2 million in revenue in FY23—a little fall from the past governmental year—while netting$ 7.3 million. The league paid the majority of its members between 2022 and 2023 about$ 5 million, with Boise State receiving the most of that amount at$ 7.9 million.
